Brief 03 - St Martins - Final Images

Here are some imagery of the products that I made for this brief including doctor uniform, which I have mock up the logo onto, clipboards and door signs  (they had run out of the turquoise acrylic so I had to use blue - but I have manipulated this so it looks turquoise for my boards), logo coasters and some snowflake laser cuts of the toys that can be used to decorate the children's area wall mural:

Brief 03 - St Martins - Door signs

Here are the designs for the doctor's door signs, I played around with the type before I decided on the italic type, so that it is different to the logo. I also wanted to design a clipboard for staff usage so I lazer cut the logo onto this too:

Brief 03 St Martin's - Waiting room Children's Area

Taking into consideration the research I did on different children's activities in waiting areas I was thinking of how I could use the logo in different way, such as jigsaws, mazes and wall murals. I quite like the idea of mocking up a wall mural that is in the shape of the logo and having it in velcro. The logo looks like a tree so the children would be able to decorate it with velcro toys. This would also be a learn gin experience as they subconsciously learn about the four seasons and the decorations could vary from different colour leaves, bugs, birds, animals, snowflakes. They could even have Christmas tree decorations in December, but I am not going to mock that up as the practice has various ethnicities and not all will celebrate Christmas:

Brief 03 - St Martins Research

I'd also like to create some sort of Welcome pack for new patients, and also for existing clients who need to know more information about the new locatio. For that I thought maybe remaking a map could work really well, using the colour scheme:

Brief 03 - St Martins - Children's Play Area Research

There are quite a lot of activities for children to get involved with when they are in waiting rooms, etc. Here are a few that i found. I quite like the wall mural I think i could adapt this to my work for the St Martins practice, and maybe get the logo involved somewhere: Kids Area Research

Brief 03 - St Martins - Signage and Wayfinding

Looking into the signage and way finding for the Practice I tried to incorporate the logo somehow. But maybe this looks a bit too corny so instead I just worked with the white and turquoise colour in the same typeface a the logo Myriad Pro. I tested creating the logo out of acrylic and it turned out really nice, I cut the logo out of white acrylic and over layed it on some turquoise acrylic so that the logo can be seen. This could be the same concept for all the signage:

FMP Briefs - Where I am so far

Having just missed a week of college due to sickness, I have taken a look at all my briefs to see where I am up to and what needs to be done to get on with things so as not to get too behind with it all.

Brief 1:  Fine Art Yearbook
One team member down, we are carrying on the FA yearbook with just four of us so have a bit more work to do, however the group is more focused and communicating better. The stan ideas for the cover are begin worked on and the glitch idea has been scrapped as it just isn't working. I have made a document in inDesign with all the pages needed for the yearbook to get the correct order, and placement of the pages. I have included student pages and images, and dummy text for the other info pages. Still waiting on information for the course ethos, welcome, exhibition, and special projects.
To do:
- Change the font for student pages (titles) Latin Modern Roman
- Include page number - centre bottom
- Work the stamp into the background of the student pages to connect the cover with the inside layouts.
- Info pages - dummy text - layouts
- Make any changes to statements and images - fill any gaps

Brief 2:  Fashion Brand
Having come up with a range of ideas for the logo which I have narrowed down to a 5 symbols and 5 typefaces, of which I need to present to Lorin to see which she prefers.
To do:
- Experiment with colour - brand
- Typeface
- How the designs will work across stationary
- Send over to Lorin - pitch ideas - ASAP
- Sacred Feminine identity - colours, textures, typeface
- Promotional flyer ideas
- Look-book concept

Brief 3:  NHS
Having pitched the logo concept to St. Martin's they preferred the appearance of a family, as the designs I created are quite floral and feminine - however they liked the colour
To do:
- Logo designs changes
- Print, trace, develop
- Symbol ideas
- Research - questionnaire to people who visit GP practice - environment
- How the designs could work across the GP Practice environment - way finding, etc.
- How the identity can be adaptable
- Stationary

Brief 4:  D&AD - Typographic Circle Supplement
Have decided to go with a more personal supplement as it is an addition to the magazine and should have more than just their work, it should be about them as a person. So I have been looking into what people want to know about them.
To do:
- Gather content
- Create questionnaires to send out to individuals who will be being featured
- Research into individuals - choose 3
- Ideas on what to do with content - how it will work - mock it up - experiment
- Look into stock and print process - as the supplements will be keep-sakes

Brief 5: Jewellers Brand

Not much progress made, few ideas for the name and some research into other Jewellery brands.
To do:
- Choose name
- Brand concept
- Ideas for identity and feel for the brand
- Visual identity ideas - logo
- Define deliverables

FOR ALL BRIEFS:

- I need to fully define the deliverables for each brief, the ones I am going to produce and the ones I am going to propose.
- I need to define the formats, scales and promotional methods - explore the impact this has on each brief.
- Get ideas out of sketchbooks and onto Mac, to see how they work, decide which to use, develop 10 of them (or as many needed) variations - make decisions.
- Need pitch boards for each brief - clarify concept and direction - what is begin designed
- Need to speed up my research and development process so I can start design and production

Brief 03 - Initial logo Ideas - Pitch boards

Open publication - Free publishing - More logo

I sent across 4xA2 boards for the initial logo designs pitch. I included a range of ideas/compositions for the tulip concept, various colour schemes. Black and white, and reversed out colour. I also mocked up how it would look across exterior signage and staff uniforms.

These are initial design ideas and regardless of whether they are chosen for the practice or not I will still develop the brief and create various deliverables.

Brief 03 - NHS - Logo Idea

The logo uses the a tulip image that represents health, and wellbeing, another image can be seen within the tulip of a figure holding its arms out. I played around with the stem of the tulip wrapping around the type as in a protective wreath to represent the community and that they the practice is their to help. However, it was starting to look like sperm, which could relate the practice to sexual health, which is not the main aim. So I chaged it to a straight stem to make it look more flower like, and I also added more petals. i think this could be developed further into an open flower to show the openness and welcoming nature of the practice. But for the pitch I will send across these initial logo ideas.

Colour Schemes

Here is a website that defines the meanings behind each colour:

Regarding the GP Practice, here are colours that I think would be the most relevant to be used within the brand identity:

Light yellow - associated with intellect, freshness and joy
Aqua - associates with emotional healing and protection
Light blue - associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding and softness
White - associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection.

Pantone colour of the year was 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise inspires thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a comforting escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing. However, a Honeysuckle pantone colour was named Pantone 2011 colour of the year. Here
It is said to be encouraging and uplifting, captivating and stimulating in times of stress to get the adrenaline going and to ward off the blues. Therefore it is quite a relevant colour, even if it may not be an obvious, common colour to be used for a GP Practice.

Brief 03 - Meeting with Camilla at the Practice

We went to visit the practice today to have a meeting with Camilla. As a group we came up with some questions regarding the brief, and also asked Camilla herself to find some logo designs that she liked/didn't like, and to come up with three words that defined the practice.

Here are some Practice logo's of some of the competitors that she found, explaining what works and what doesn't

Out of hours service provider
- friendly but a bit clip arty

Successful large practices in Leeds – which have a lack of brand identity
- is distinctive but quite boring and doesn't immediately reflect a GP practice.

- very plain and not much brand identity going on

- the biggest practice in Leeds, however there is little brand identity going on, quite boring

Private Providers – definite brand identity but ….
This is the main competitor that will be situated in the same building as ST Martin's after the relocation. The identity is very clinical and obvious - Camilla doesn't want the logo to be as obvious as using a cross symbol.

- a bit boring and again using the cross symbol - quite common and obvious to represent medical care.
Clinical commissioning groups in Leeds

A logo that stood out for Camilla was the Calibre logo, as it is friendly and has more about it than the others. The choice of typeface is nice too. However, she downs;t want a tag lien for St Martin's.
Another logo that she liked
Grand Designs – logo on the TV show
- the one with the house - it is friendly, inviting and simple.

Three things describing the Practice, and what the brand identity should portray:

ONE
TWO
THREE
Open door
Accessibility
Recognising difference

Long-term relationships
Partnership
NB not just with GPs: team approach
Friendliness
Caring
Kindness
Holistic

1 . Open - available accessible

2. long arm relationships
   - do what they can to keep patients on their list
   - partnership - doctors and nurses team approach
   - diverse range of patients - cultures

- 2/3 mile radius of patients
- can't advertise - saying why patients should use them, so should just try to be as welcoming as possible
- recognisable and memorable brand

3. Friendly - kind caring
   - not just about sick people - everybody
   - patient who maybe ignoring symptoms should feel they can go to St Martin's
   - high quality service

The information she brought was very useful and gave us more of an idea of what she is after for the brand identity, after stating what she like and doesn't like. A few other points for the logo:
- must work across collateral - variations
- black and white versions
- application to uniforms - t-shirts
- adaptable colours - CMYK
- blue - Cian - is easy to produce
- not using lime as that is the main colour of the competitor, One Medicare.
- must be calm
- guidelines of how it should be used should be included
- Must use typefaces that are easily accessible for internal and external documents and website
- must work over various scales large and small
- the NHS logo must appear as part of the exterior signage

I spotted some opportunities for places that the brand identity could work across whilst looking around the practice. I could mock up example soy this for the pitch
- Toilet Signage
- Doctor signs - Doctor/Nurse Names
- Compliments/complaints/comments box
- Prescription Request box - 'Please put your request forms in this box. Thank you'
-The play are
- Please take on appointment guide
- Check in on Touch Screen - sign

I will right a brief up that clarifies and focused the brief down, now I have a clear idea of what the client wants.

The submission for the brand identity/logo design pitch is: Monday 20th February 2012, 4pm

NHS - St Martins Practice - Meeting

Just had a quick briefing about the meeting which is arranged for next Monday at 3pm, at the practice.
We need to set a deadline with them for when we need to hand in our pitch boards. (A2/3 boards)

A few things I can start to design ideas for:

- logo - variations - colour
- how it could work over a range of media
- stationary
- wayfinding
- flyers
- leaflets

Together with the rest of the people who are interested in the brief we came up with a set of question that we want to ask at the meeting next Monday. And a few things for them to find out before we meet them.

To do:

- research into private practices, e.g. Bupa, how their branding works across media.
- initial design ideas

NHS - St Martins Practice - Briefing

We had a briefing with Camilla, practice manager, to discuss her brief.

Here are some notes I took form the briefing.

St Martins Practice in Chapeltown are moving to a new building and require branding. They are competing for patients with a private practice situated in the same building and need to portray themselves as caring and the practice to use over the other.

They need a logo that will be used in house, and across signage and stationary
They want to show how they are different to other GP practice.

There are currently 6 doctors - and around 25 staff altogether
Their GP to patient ratio is what they feel makes them different to others as they have more doctors to cover the patients.

Their new building is also away form the main road so the identity needs to be memorable and welcoming.

A visit to the practice is going to be arranged for next week, to meet the staff and get a feel for the practice, and to discuss their aims and ideas for the brand image. I will then come back and write up a brief and send it to Camilla for her to approve it or make any canoes.

Deliverables for assessment can be different than the ones required for the live brief.
