Brief 06 - Design Context Publication - Final Images

Here is my final design context publication. When binding the book I had to select end papers of which I chose a striking turquoise to shock and intrigue the viewer. It also worked well as I had some turquoise foil of which I foiled the title onto the dust jacket. Really happy with how this looks. I think it looks professional.

Brief 06 - Design Context Publication - Final Design

Here is the final design for my design context publication:

Open publication - Free publishing - More context

There are a total of 52 pages plus the cover, so I chose to split the book into 3 signatures (2 signatures with 4 sheets (16 pages each) and 1 signature with 5 sheets (20 pages)):

I saved the files as postscript files to get the pagination right for printing. Since the printing room is fully booked I will be printing the book down at the Vernon street building, and also binding it myself. I always intended to do this as the content is all work that inspires me, so making it myself gives it more of a personal touch to it. I am also a perfectionist when it comes to making things, and since I know a few others who have sent their books off to be printed haven't come out how they would have liked, doing it myself would mean I am in control of who it will end up.

I will be printing on to white matt paper and putting a black material covered hardback. I have also chosen turquoise/blue end papers to give a fresh, bright feel to the book, which will work nicely with a black card dust jacket with a turquoise foiled title.

After binding the book I also designed a dust jacket but first I had to measure it properly it cam ego 255mm height with 398 mm width (including 18 mm spine) and then for the flaps that tuck inside the book I asked Miek in th bubble if I could pritn somehow that was on the A3 printed but was abel to print bait longer as there would only be 10mm flap either side. I was able to print 470 width so that left 35mm flaps for the inside. I had to do it this way because I wanted to foil the title on the front and therefore have to print on an inkjet printer:

Brief 06 - Design Context - B&W Print for proof read

Here is a black and white printed version of what I have I done for the DC publication to do the proof read before I send it to final print. I really like how it is looking now and can't wait to get it printed and bound properly:

Brief 06 - Design Context - Order of Contents

Here are the final spreads:

And here is the order of content of which the spreads will be in:

Brief 06 - Design Context - Layout Development

I decided to change the grid to make the content fit nicely with some more space in the margins and column widths, as my layouts were looking too crowded. I also increased the scale of the pages to 190 x 250 mm To make it slightly bigger yet I will still be able to print the spreads on an A3 sheet with the bleed and crop marks.

Chapter Press

Some great brochures printed by Chapter press, with some good use of stock and print process.

I really love the use of opaque stock inside the book which allows you to see through onto the next page - in this case they have pretend a red image onto what looks like tracing paper to get this see through effect. I also love the embossing on the supplement, when thinking of my D&AD brief this could be used as a subtle change to each publication.

Brief 06 - Design Context Publication Spreads

height 235mm x width 170mm

Print test spreads:

Open publication - Free publishing - More layout

I did a print test to see how they would look. However I think the content looks a bit crowded I could do with increasing the page size and also increasing the margins and column width to give the content a bit more space:

Brief 06 - Design Context - Research

I was really inspired by the layout of Vice Magazine, and the way it composites the text with the images given them clarity and space. I also really like the large, bold titles:

BIBA Book

A great publication for BIBa - I found this on the internet I just love the simplicity of the design, as well as it begin sophisticated and luxury. The foiling and colour edging is also a nice touch, which gives it a special finish. The scale of the book is also a good size as it fits a double page spread on a A3 sheet which lowers print costs. It is similar to what I would like for my Design Conext publication has it is very high end, high spec.

Most people will be familiar with the name Biba. Starting as a mail order company in the early sixties and becoming a global fashion phenomenon by the early seventies, Biba became one of the great symbols of swinging London. Biba closed its doors in 1975 but was relaunched in September 2010 (exclusively at House of Fraser).
A lookbook for the re-launch was designed and produced by London based creative agency, Exposure.

The size of the book is 235x170mm, portrait, perfect bound. The 4pp cover is on Notturno 300gsm (a black board) and is hot foil blocked in gold on the outside cover. The 52pp test is printed on our Omnia 200gsm which, although quite heavy for text, really works because of the gilt (gold) edge which runs around the page edges.

Art Director on the project was Simon Boniface. The photography is by Leandro Farina.Print and print production including the superb foiling and gilt edging was by Chapter Press

Brief 06 - Design Context Presentation 02

Here are the slides form my presentation.

Since the first presentation I have focused down the content of the publication and now have a clear direction to what I need to do and what I need to include:

Guerilla

'GONE required a high impact and high value document to celebrate the successes and provide a communication tool for the procurement of further European funding streams.
An oversize format was chosen to give the brochure standout and was created as a modular piece to have greater flexibility and longevity. It showcased individuals and their experiences through powerful black and white portrait photography and emotive copy, this was reflected in the brochure title, ‘Getting below the surface’.'
